As technology and new discoveries have evolved the atomic models have changed. It began with solid balls because it was thought that atoms could not divided any further. However it was later found that atoms were made up of a nucleus and electrons and the charge was found of each particle. The atomic model of the solid balls no longer fit with the new knowledge of atoms.
Atomic models have changed over the years from one of tiny, solid balls, to the current model of electrons orbiting the nucleus as new evidences emerge.
Science is empirical in nature. Science deals with evidence and facts change as new evidences emerge. This is the reason why many scientific theories are being revised from time to time.
As technology becomes more sophisticated and new equipment are designed, a more detailed study of the atom is made possible. Recent studies using equipment such a spectrometers have shown that atoms absorb and emit energy in discrete amounts implying that electrons are found in distinct energy levels. This led to our current idea of electrons orbiting the nucleus.
