Dr. Goldstein is doing an experiment to study the effect of caffeine on memory. Fifty PS101 students were given three cups of regular coffee and then asked to memorize lists of words. Another fifty students were given three cups of decaffeinated coffee and then asked to memorize the same lists of words. The two groups are then compared to see who remembered more words on the list of words they memorized. What is the independent variable in this study and why? What is the dependent variable and why?

1) Dependent Variable; Amount of words they can remember that they memorized.

2) Independent Variable; Type of Coffee they drank. This is based on the concept of variables.

A variable is simply anything we are trying to measure. The 2 main types of variables are;

- Dependent Variables

- Independent Variables

  • An independent variable is a type of variable that can stand on its own and is not affected by other variables we want to measure.

  • A dependent variable is defined as a variable that can't stand alone but depends and is affected by other factors we are trying to measure.

  • In this question, first of all, we can see that for both groups they are given coffee to drink. First group is given regular coffee while the second group is given decaffeinated coffee.

  • Secondly, their memory patterns are observed in terms of the number of words they can memorize.

    This means that the coffee will be the independent variable as it doesn't depend on other factors being measured/considered in the experiment.

    In contrast, the amount of words they can remember they memorized will be the dependent variable because it is based on the type of coffee they drink since a regular coffee will not have same effect as decaffeinated coffee on memorizing.
