A growing population that inhabits a limited space is gradually affected by density, rebounding in the multiplication rate.
The population growth per capita rate decreases as population size increases.
The population reaches a maximum point delimited by available resources, such as food or space. This point is known as the carrying capacity, K.
Carrying capacity refers to the maximum point at which the environment can support a growing population.
K is a constant. It coincides with the population size when natality rate and mortality rate are equal to each other. This is the equilibrium point.
- If the population size, N, is inferior to K (N still grow.
- When N approximates to K, the population´s growth speed decreases.
- When N=K, the population reaches equilibrium,
- When N is superior to K (N>K), the population must decrease in size because there are not enough resources to maintain that size.
So when the population size exceeds K, carrying capacity makes the population decrease in size. This is because there are not enough resources for this population to survive.
