x= 3y+4 (4 more than 3 times a #)
y= other number

x+y= 36
Substitute x= 3y+4 in equation for x
(3y+4)+y= 36
4y+4= 36
Subtract 4 from both sides
4y= 32
Divide both sides by 4
y= 8

Now substitute answer for y in x= 3y+4 equation to find x

x= 3(8)+4
x=24+4
x= 28

Check:
x+y= 36
8+28=36
36= 36
