Equal Protection Clause: The Supreme Court ruled that there was not a uniform method of conducting the recount and therefore unconstitutional. 

This recount was violating the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment in which the votes must be equally protected. Since the recount was not consistent, equal protection was being violated.
